How it plays
Gun-Nac is viewed from above in a continuously scrolling vertical playfield. The objective is to survive each stage, destroy enemy formations, collect money and power-ups, and defeat a large end-of-stage boss.
The ship fires continuously while the player dodges bullets and terrain hazards. Several weapon types can be upgraded, and bombs provide a powerful screen-clearing attack. A shop between stages lets the player spend collected money on equipment, creating a light resource-management layer alongside arcade shooting. The campaign is divided into multiple stages with distinct enemy patterns and bosses.
Plan your run
Prioritize survival over greed when enemy fire becomes dense. Collect money whenever the route is safe, then use the shop to strengthen the weapon you rely on most rather than spreading upgrades too thinly.
Save bombs for crowded passages, surprise attacks, or bosses. Learn each boss's movement pattern and keep the ship moving in small, controlled arcs instead of making large, predictable sweeps.

The player-controlled pilot and protagonist, sent to investigate the strange disasters threatening the planet.
Before you begin
Use the shop regularly; unspent money is less valuable than a weapon or defensive upgrade that helps you reach the next stage.
Keep a reserve of bombs for bosses and difficult checkpoint sections.
Avoid chasing every drop when doing so places the ship in the path of bullets.
Gun-Nac is a vertically scrolling science-fiction shoot 'em up developed by Compile for the Nintendo Entertainment System and published by ASCII Corporation. The player controls the titular pilot as he investigates bizarre disasters affecting a distant planet, battling swarms of mechanical and biological enemies across a sequence of stages. The game combines rapid arcade-style shooting with a more flexible upgrade system than many console shooters. Enemies drop money and power-ups, allowing Gun-Nac to purchase weapons, bombs, defensive improvements, and other equipment between missions. Its colorful presentation, unusual humor, and responsive controls earned it a strong reputation among NES shooter fans, although its limited release has made it less widely known than Compile's other shooters.
