How it plays
The game uses a third-person, tile-based perspective around the farm, town, mines, and nearby wilderness. Each day begins with limited stamina and time, so players must balance watering crops, caring for livestock, gathering resources, shopping, and visiting villagers.
Crops grow by season, while chickens, cows, and sheep provide products that can be sold or processed. Tools can be upgraded with ore, and farm buildings can be expanded. Festivals, weather, rival events, friendship values, and marriage candidates create long-term progression across multiple years.
Plan your run
Plan each season before planting. Reserve enough stamina for watering and harvesting, then use rainy days or spare time for mining, fishing, and relationship building.
Upgrade tools selectively, expand the rucksack when possible, and give villagers gifts they like regularly. Keep animals fed and interact with them daily so their products and affection improve.

Harvest Moon: Back to Nature is a farming and life simulation game developed by Victor Interactive Software for the original PlayStation and published internationally by Natsume. The player returns to a neglected farm in Mineral Town and has several years to restore it while building relationships with villagers. Daily play combines crop cultivation, animal care, mining, fishing, seasonal festivals, and marriage-oriented social events. Its open-ended routine gives players considerable freedom in choosing how to spend each day. The game was widely praised for bringing the Harvest Moon formula to a home console audience, and it became one of the best-known entries in the series outside Japan. Its sequel-like systems and memorable town cast helped establish the template for later farming simulations.
