How it plays
Matches use a third-person, elevated broadcast view. The objective is to outscore the opposing national team within regulation time, with standard football rules governing restarts, fouls, and offside situations.
Players move teammates, pass through space, shoot, cross, tackle, and switch control between defenders. The game includes exhibition play and competition-oriented modes, with tournaments providing a structured progression through successive matches. Team selection, formations, and tactical adjustments support different approaches to possession and counterattacking.
Plan your run
Use short passes to draw defenders out before switching play to the opposite flank. Avoid sprinting continuously; controlled movement makes first touches and changes of direction more reliable.
Defend by containing the ball carrier and switching to the nearest useful defender rather than chasing with one player. Crosses and through balls are most effective when the receiving attacker has already moved beyond the defensive line.
Before you begin
Keep a safe passing option behind the ball when attacking.
Use wide players to stretch compact defenses.
Change formation when a team is losing control of midfield.
International Superstar Soccer Pro is a 1997 PlayStation football game developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Osaka and published by Konami. It presents international football through a simulation-oriented ruleset, with national teams, tournament competition, exhibition matches, and player-management options. Matches are played from a broadcast-style overhead perspective, while passing, shooting, tackling, crossing, and goalkeeper control are mapped to the standard PlayStation pad. The game is notable for refining the technical foundation that would become associated with Konami's Winning Eleven line in the West. Contemporary players generally praised its responsive controls, tactical variety, and presentation, although licensing limitations and uneven team data kept it below the realism of some competitors. Its importance lies in establishing a strong PlayStation foundation for later ISS Pro and Pro Evolution Soccer releases.
