How it plays
The game is viewed from the side as Joe or Mac travels through linear prehistoric stages. The objective is to reach each stage's end, defeat enemies, avoid hazards, and overcome bosses.
Players can move, jump, attack with primitive weapons, and collect power-ups that improve attack range or effectiveness. The NES version supports one-player and two-player alternating play. Progress is divided into themed areas, with lives and continues controlling how much of the adventure can be completed in one session.
Plan your run
Use short attacks while approaching enemies instead of standing directly beside them. Jump over enemies when the terrain is crowded, and learn the timing of each weapon's range.
Save stronger attacks for bosses and dense groups. Explore carefully for useful items, but avoid unnecessary risks when low on lives. In two-player mode, alternating turns makes it easier to study difficult sections without losing both players at once.

Joe & Mac is a side-scrolling action-platformer developed and published by Data East for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It adapts the arcade game Caveman Ninja, placing two prehistoric warriors in a mission to rescue kidnapped women from rival cavemen and dangerous creatures. The game combines running, jumping, climbing, and close-range weapon attacks across dinosaur-filled stages. Its colorful prehistoric setting and arcade-inspired combat gave it a distinctive personality, although the NES version is more limited than the arcade original. Reception generally recognized its entertaining action and cooperative option while noting uneven difficulty and technical compromises.
