How it plays
Kenseiden is viewed from the side. Hayato moves through horizontally scrolling stages, defeats enemies with his sword, avoids hazards, and reaches the end of each area. Timing attacks and jumps is important because contact with enemies can quickly reduce his limited health.
The world map presents several regions and allows the player to tackle stages in a changing sequence. Progress depends on clearing areas, finding power-ups, and obtaining sword techniques that expand Hayato’s attack options. Boss encounters test the techniques and patterns learned during the preceding stages.
Plan your run
Learn the range and recovery time of every sword technique before relying on it in crowded areas. Fight from a safe distance when possible, and avoid jumping into enemies that can be defeated more reliably from the ground.
Explore each stage carefully for useful items and upgrades. On the regional map, choose routes that help develop Hayato’s abilities before attempting the most demanding areas, and study boss attack patterns rather than attacking continuously.
Meet the cast

The principal warlord opposing Hayato, associated with the game’s demonic threat and the conflict that drives the adventure.
Before you begin
Use short, deliberate attacks instead of repeatedly pressing the sword button in close quarters.
Watch enemy movement before jumping; many hits come from landing on an approaching foe.
Upgrade or learn sword techniques as soon as the route allows, then practice their timing.
Kenseiden is a side-scrolling action platformer developed and published by Sega for the Sega Master System. Set in a fictionalized feudal Japan, it follows the swordsman Hayato as he travels through dangerous provinces and haunted locations while opposing the warlord Nobunaga and supernatural forces. The game combines sword fighting, jumping challenges, enemy patterns, and exploration. Its campaign is divided into stages connected by a regional map, with new sword techniques improving Hayato’s abilities as the adventure progresses. Kenseiden was noted for its atmospheric presentation, dramatic samurai theme, and demanding combat, although its difficulty and collision-sensitive platforming received mixed reactions. It remains a distinctive original action game in the Master System library.
