How it plays
Pit progresses through four areas, each divided into stages. Most early sections scroll upward, requiring careful jumps while enemies attack from multiple directions. Fortresses change the perspective to horizontal exploration and contain doors, shops, treasure rooms, and bosses.
The player uses arrows to defeat enemies and collects hearts as currency. Weapons, protective items, health upgrades, and stronger arrow power improve survival. Falling into pits costs a life, while special rooms and experience levels can restore or increase Pit's endurance. The final area uses conventional horizontal platforming and leads to the ending battles.

Kid Icarus is an action-platform adventure developed by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Nintendo for the NES. It follows Pit, a winged guardian, as he fights through the Underworld to rescue the goddess Palutena and restore peace after Medusa's invasion. The game alternates between vertically scrolling stages, horizontally scrolling fortresses, and a final side-scrolling area. Pit jumps across platforms, shoots enemies with arrows, collects upgrades, and searches for hidden rooms. Its unusual structure and challenging controls gave it a distinctive identity, although contemporary reception was mixed because of its difficulty and occasionally awkward platforming. It later gained a strong cult following.
