How it plays
Matches use a side-view perspective and pit teams of fighters against one another. The objective is to defeat the opposing team by reducing each fighter's stamina before the player's entire team is eliminated.
Players move, jump, crouch, attack, block, throw, and perform character-specific special moves. Battles progress through a sequence of team matches, with the selected roster and arcade-style encounters providing the main progression. The game also includes versus-style play for direct competition.
Plan your run
Learn the timing of blocking, jumping, and throws before relying on special moves. Short matches reward safe attacks and careful spacing rather than constant button presses.
Use a team with complementary ranges and speeds. Save powerful techniques for clear openings, and practice each fighter's command inputs in a low-pressure mode before entering longer tournament sequences.

The King of Fighters R-2 is a handheld fighting game developed and published by SNK for the Neo Geo Pocket. It adapts the team-based combat and crossover roster of The King of Fighters into a compact format designed for short matches. Players select fighters associated with SNK series and battle through tournament-style encounters using punches, kicks, special moves, and throws. R-2 is notable for offering a more substantial follow-up to The King of Fighters R-1, with improved presentation and a broader selection of fighters. Its simplified controls and small-screen presentation reflect the hardware, while the emphasis on team battles preserves the identity of the arcade series. Reception has generally focused on its effective handheld adaptation and accessible combat.
