How it plays
The game is viewed from a side-on perspective and uses one-on-one rounds. Players choose a warrior, defeat opponents in sequence, and face increasingly difficult encounters while using attacks, special moves, and defensive techniques.
The compact roster gives each fighter a distinct weapon and fighting style. Matches emphasize spacing, timing, blocking, and punish opportunities. Single-player play provides the main progression, while versus play supports matches against another player.
Plan your run
Learn the spacing of each fighter’s weapon before relying on special moves. Short attacks are useful for checking movement, while heavier attacks can punish missed strikes but are easier to evade.
Block patiently and look for recovery after an opponent’s unsafe attack. In single-player mode, observe the computer’s repeated patterns and use a reliable anti-air or close-range punish rather than attempting complicated attacks every round.
Meet the cast
A young swordsman and central hero associated with the spiritual powers at the heart of The Last Blade.
A disciplined swordsman whose story is tied to betrayal, duty, and his relationship with Kaede.
A skilled warrior connected to the supernatural conflict surrounding the game’s protagonists.
A lively onmyoji who uses spiritual techniques alongside her weapon attacks.
A powerful fighter who relies on a large club and straightforward physical strength.
A mysterious swordsman associated with death and dark supernatural power.
Before you begin
Use the training or versus environment to learn attack range and timing before attempting the full single-player route.
Do not treat every heavy attack as a combo starter; many are more useful as punishers.
Keep opponents at the end of your weapon’s range when playing a space-oriented swordsman.
The Last Blade: Beyond the Destiny is a weapon-based fighting game developed and published by SNK for the Neo Geo Pocket Color. It adapts the atmosphere and combat ideas of SNK’s arcade series The Last Blade, placing swordsmen and other warriors in a supernatural interpretation of late nineteenth-century Japan. Matches focus on directional movement, normal attacks, special techniques, and defensive timing rather than projectile-heavy combat. The handheld version includes a compact single-player progression, versus play, and a roster drawn from the larger series. It was generally well received for preserving the identity of the arcade games within the Neo Geo Pocket’s limitations, although its reduced presentation and smaller roster distinguish it from the arcade releases.
