The Protagonist
A silent customizable hero who restores Fa'Diel by placing artifacts and becomes involved in its regional stories.
How it plays
The game uses a side-view, hand-drawn 2D perspective for exploration and real-time battles. Players travel between locations on the world map, fight monsters, collect materials, and complete quests for townspeople and recurring characters.
Progression is built around artifacts found during quests. Placing an artifact creates a new location, and the resulting map arrangement affects available events, shops, and resource quality. Players can equip weapons and armor, learn special techniques, raise pets, build golems, grow produce, and forge equipment. The main story is divided into multiple quest arcs rather than a single linear campaign.
Plan your run
Explore newly created locations thoroughly before placing more artifacts, since map placement can affect event access and resource quality.
Keep several weapon types and elemental abilities available. Upgrade equipment regularly, carry healing items, and revisit towns after major quests because new events often become available.
Use the forge, orchard, monster-pet, and golem systems when their materials are available, but none is mandatory for completing the central quest arcs.

Legend of Mana is an action role-playing game developed and published by Square for the original PlayStation. Set in the fragmented world of Fa'Diel, it follows a silent protagonist who rebuilds the land by placing magical artifacts on an empty map. Each artifact creates a town, dungeon, or other location, opening independent quests and a number of connected story arcs. The game combines real-time combat, equipment crafting, farming, golem creation, and collectible pets with a richly illustrated 2D presentation. Its open-ended structure gives players substantial freedom in how they explore and which stories they complete. Reception praised the artwork, music, and atmosphere, while opinions were more divided about the loose narrative structure and sometimes opaque progression.
