How it plays

How does The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages play?

Players guide Link from a top-down perspective through overworld regions, dungeons, caves, and villages. The main objective is to recover eight Essences of Time while defeating dungeon bosses and ultimately confronting Veran.

Link attacks with a sword, blocks with a shield, uses specialized items, solves environment-based puzzles, and gains heart containers and equipment upgrades. The Harp of Ages enables travel between the past and present. Passwords and linked games with Oracle of Seasons unlock additional story content and a final battle.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages?

Explore both eras whenever a path or object seems blocked; many locations change significantly between the past and present.

Upgrade the sword, shield, rings, and seed capacity when possible. Dungeon maps, compasses, and the Seed Satchel make later exploration much safer, while each dungeon item is usually central to that dungeon’s puzzles and boss.
