How it plays
Each stage is viewed from a single-screen side perspective. The objective is to collect all treasure, then reach the exit that appears after the final piece is taken.
The runner can move across platforms, climb ladders, use hand-over-hand bars, and dig holes in adjacent floor tiles. Guards pursue the player and can be delayed by falling into holes, but holes refill after a short time. Later stages require route planning, baiting enemies, and careful timing rather than simple speed.
Plan your run
Study the entire stage before moving, especially the locations of ladders, bars, and isolated treasure.

Before you begin
Treat every hole as temporary; do not rely on it as permanent terrain.
When several guards are nearby, move them into predictable paths before collecting treasure.
The final treasure often determines the safest route to the exit.
Lode Runner is a puzzle-platform game developed for the NES by Hudson Soft, based on the original design by Doug Smith. The player controls a runner who must collect every piece of treasure in each single-screen stage while avoiding enemy guards. Its play style combines precise movement, timing, and short-lived holes that can trap or delay enemies. The NES edition presents a large collection of increasingly demanding levels and retains the series’ editor-focused design philosophy. Lode Runner became highly regarded for turning simple actions into complex puzzles, and it helped establish the puzzle-platform genre on home consoles.
