How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective across a linear sequence of gothic stages. Dr. Social advances from left to right, defeats enemies, avoids hazards, and reaches a boss at the end of each area.
Players can jump, crouch, attack, and collect temporary weapons or useful items. Progress depends on surviving platforming sections and learning enemy patterns; there is no character-level system or branching campaign.
Plan your run
Keep moving, but pause before unfamiliar platforms so that enemies and hazards can be read safely.
Use the regular weapon to conserve stronger pickups for bosses. Crouching is useful against some projectiles, while repeated attacks at close range should be avoided when an enemy has a long contact range.
Bosses are safest when approached after learning their attack rhythm; prioritize survival over collecting every item.

Master of Darkness is a side-scrolling action platformer developed by SIMS and published by Sega for the Sega Master System in 1992. Set in a gothic version of Victorian London, it follows Dr. Ferdinand Social as he investigates a series of murders connected to Jack the Ripper and supernatural forces. The game combines whip-and-weapon combat, jumping challenges, and horror-themed stage design in a style strongly associated with classic console action games. Its compact campaign and polished presentation earned it a generally favorable reputation, particularly among Master System players, although its structure and mechanics are clearly influenced by Castlevania.
