How it plays
The game uses side-scrolling action-platforming stages viewed from a 2D perspective. The objective is to clear eight selectable Maverick stages, defeat each boss, and gain new weapons or techniques before confronting the final sequence.
X can charge his buster, find armor capsules, and exploit boss weaknesses. Zero relies on the Z-Saber and learns techniques from defeated bosses. Both characters can run, jump, dash, climb selected walls, collect energy, and fight through hazards. Completing stages improves survivability and opens different tactical options.
Plan your run
Choose stages according to the boss weaknesses available to your character, but do not neglect exploration. Sub-tanks, Heart Tanks, and armor capsules can make later stages substantially easier.
With X, charge the buster and use armor abilities to control difficult sections. With Zero, learn the timing of the Z-Saber and use his acquired techniques selectively rather than attacking blindly. Practice dash jumps and wall movement, especially in stages with instant-death hazards.

Mega Man X4 is a 1997 action platformer developed and published by Capcom for the PlayStation. It follows the Reploids X and Zero as a conflict between humans and Reploids escalates into a military crisis. Players choose one hero, then fight through eight themed stages filled with enemies, traps, bosses, and upgrade opportunities. X emphasizes ranged attacks and collectible armor parts, while Zero uses a close-range energy sword and a more combat-focused progression system. The game was well received for its animation, soundtrack, responsive controls, and the meaningful contrast between its two campaigns. It is often regarded as one of the strongest entries in the Mega Man X series.
