How it plays
The game uses a side-scrolling perspective. Players choose from selectable Maverick stages, defeat bosses, rescue Reploids, collect items, and investigate Nightmare effects that can alter stage conditions.
X can run, jump, shoot, dash, climb walls, and use special weapons. Armor parts improve his abilities, while rescued Reploids can provide resources or upgrades. Defeated bosses grant weapons that exploit other bosses' weaknesses, and progress leads toward the final stages and Gate's laboratory.
Plan your run
Rescue Reploids whenever the route is reasonably safe, because their rewards can improve survivability and equipment options. Check stage conditions before entering: Nightmare effects can change hazards, enemy behavior, or available routes.
Use boss weaknesses to shorten difficult fights, and consider armor selection carefully. The Blade, Shadow, and Ultimate-style options each support different approaches, while Zero rewards close-range timing and careful use of his saber.

Mega Man X6 is a 2001 action platformer developed and published by Capcom for the original PlayStation. Set after the events of Mega Man X5, it follows X as he investigates the Nightmare phenomenon and the appearance of the mysterious scientist Gate. The game combines traditional side-scrolling shooting with exploration, armor upgrades, selectable stages, and multiple routes through dangerous areas. Zero can also become playable after a documented in-game encounter. X6 received mixed historical reception: critics generally praised its responsive controls, challenging boss battles, and visual presentation, while criticizing its confusing stage design, harsh instant-death hazards, and uneven difficulty. It remains notable for its darker story and extensive equipment customization.
