How it plays
The game uses a top-down perspective for most exploration, with side-view sections and other variations in some areas. Solid Snake infiltrates Outer Heaven, rescues hostages, gathers key cards and equipment, and destroys Metal Gear.
Guards follow alert rules and can summon reinforcements, so avoiding detection is often safer than attacking. The player expands access by collecting rank stars, obtains weapons and tools, and uses the transceiver to receive mission information. Key cards open doors of matching levels, while bosses and special objectives divide the fortress into progressive areas.
Plan your run
Stay outside enemy vision whenever possible and use walls, corners, and doorways to break contact. If an alert begins, leave the screen or hide until the pursuit ends rather than wasting ammunition.
Rescue hostages regularly to raise rank and increase Snake's maximum health. Search rooms carefully for key cards, rations, ammunition, and equipment; some progression items are hidden behind ordinary-looking walls or require a particular card level.
Save powerful weapons and explosives for bosses and armored targets. Check the transceiver frequently, because radio messages can reveal objectives, passwords, and navigation clues.

Metal Gear is a stealth action-adventure game developed and published by Konami for the Nintendo Entertainment System. It follows Solid Snake, a rookie operative sent into the fictional nation of Outer Heaven to investigate a powerful walking nuclear weapon called Metal Gear. Rather than relying only on combat, the game emphasizes avoiding guards, gathering intelligence, finding equipment, and choosing when to fight. The NES version is a distinct adaptation of the MSX2 original, with altered areas, bosses, and story details. Its combination of infiltration, exploration, item management, and radio-guided objectives was unusual for a console action game of its era. Reception was mixed because of the adaptation's differences, but the game remains historically important as an early home-console entry in one of gaming's most influential stealth series.
