Lord Ironfist
A major ruler and quest-giver in Varn who directs the party toward important objectives.
How it plays
The game uses a first-person view for exploration and a command-driven, turn-based battle system. Players move through towns, outdoor areas, castles, towers, and dungeons while searching for clues, treasure, traps, trainers, and quest objectives.
A party can contain up to six custom characters with different classes, attributes, weapons, armor, and spell abilities. Combat requires choosing attacks, spells, defenses, and other commands for each character. Progress comes from gaining experience, improving statistics, finding equipment, learning spells, and completing quests. Several areas contain hidden passages, puzzles, hazards, and encounters that reward careful mapping.
Plan your run
Build a balanced party with durable front-line fighters, reliable healing, and several spellcasters. Keep multiple character classes represented so the group can handle combat, exploration, and magical problems.
Map every dungeon carefully and record locked doors, traps, fountains, trainers, and quest clues. Save often before entering unfamiliar areas, and return to towns regularly to restore resources, improve equipment, and train when enough experience has been collected.
Meet the cast
A major ruler and quest-giver in Varn who directs the party toward important objectives.
An ancient and mysterious figure whose history is closely connected to the Inner Sanctum.
A recurring antagonist whose actions drive much of the game's central conflict.
Before you begin
Create a balanced six-character party rather than relying on one class.
Keep written maps and quest notes; many locations are easy to revisit incorrectly.
Save before experiments with traps, fountains, and dangerous dungeon routes.
Might and Magic Book One: The Secret of the Inner Sanctum is a first-person computer role-playing game developed and published by New World Computing for DOS in 1986. The player creates a party of adventurers and explores the land of Varn, combining wilderness travel, towns, dungeons, quests, and turn-based combat. Its central mystery concerns the Inner Sanctum and the activities of the enigmatic Corak and Sheltem. Character statistics, classes, equipment, spells, and experience shape the party over a lengthy campaign. The game was historically notable for its unusually broad world and ambitious blend of fantasy and science-fiction ideas, although its interface and difficulty can feel demanding by later standards.
