How it plays
Myst uses a first-person, node-based viewpoint. The player moves between fixed locations, examines objects, operates switches and mechanisms, and searches for written clues. The island acts as a central hub leading to several Ages, each with its own visual identity, devices, and puzzle chain.
There is no combat, timer, or conventional inventory-based character progression. Books and notes provide context and hints, while solving each Age's mechanisms reveals access to new locations and information about Atrus's family. The ending depends on the player's interpretation of the evidence and the choices made near the conclusion.
Plan your run
Record every symbol, sequence, sound, and machine setting. Many puzzles provide information in one location that must be applied somewhere else, so revisiting earlier areas is expected.
Read both brothers' accounts critically instead of accepting either story immediately. Map the Ages and test mechanisms methodically; random button pressing is less useful than identifying what each control changes and comparing it with the clues you have found.

Editorial context
A landmark atmospheric adventure with beautiful environments and intricate puzzles.
Its slow pace and occasionally indirect clue design may frustrate players who prefer constant guidance.
Myst is a first-person graphic adventure developed by Cyan. The player arrives on a mysterious island after passing through a strange linking book, with no stated objective beyond exploring the abandoned structures and uncovering what happened there. Progress depends on examining environments, reading journals, interpreting machines, and solving environmental puzzles rather than fighting or collecting conventional rewards. The PlayStation version adapts the landmark CD-ROM adventure for console play, presenting its pre-rendered scenes and atmospheric sound through a controller interface. Myst was widely praised for its immersive presentation, deliberate pace, and demanding puzzles, while its minimal guidance and sometimes obscure clues divided players. It became one of the most influential adventure games of the 1990s.
