How it plays
Pac-Man is viewed from above in a fixed maze. The objective is to clear every small pellet and Power Pellet while surviving contact with the ghosts. Eating a Power Pellet makes the ghosts vulnerable for a limited time, and fruit appears in the maze for additional points.
Each round uses the same basic maze structure, while ghost movement and the shortening vulnerability period increase the challenge. Pac-Man has no jump or attack button: survival depends on turning at the right moment, using tunnels, and choosing when to confront or evade the ghosts. Clearing a maze advances the game to the next round.
Plan your run
Plan routes before collecting the final pellets, and avoid entering narrow areas with a ghost directly behind you. Use tunnels to change the distance between Pac-Man and the pursuers.
Save Power Pellets for situations where they provide an escape or a chance to collect several frightened ghosts. Learn the ghosts’ different movement tendencies, and remember that the frightened period becomes shorter as rounds progress.
Meet the cast
The yellow maze runner who eats pellets, fruit, and temporarily vulnerable ghosts.
The red ghost, commonly associated with directly pursuing Pac-Man.
The pink ghost that attempts to intercept Pac-Man’s route.
The cyan ghost whose movement combines pursuit with less predictable positioning.
The orange ghost whose behavior alternates between chasing and wandering away.
Before you begin
Use the maze corners and side tunnels to break pursuit.
Do not spend both Power Pellets immediately; keep one for an emergency.
Collect fruit when the route is safe, but do not risk a life for a small bonus.
Pac-Man for the Nintendo Entertainment System is Namco’s home version of its influential maze-chase arcade game. The player guides Pac-Man through single-screen mazes, eating pellets, collecting fruit, and avoiding four pursuing ghosts. Power Pellets temporarily reverse the danger, allowing Pac-Man to chase and consume the ghosts for bonus points. The NES edition preserves the arcade game’s fundamental rules in a straightforward controller-based format. Its play style is built around quick reactions, route planning, and memorizing ghost behavior rather than complex controls. Although the conversion is less visually and aurally polished than the arcade original, it offered a recognizable version of one of gaming’s defining releases and was generally regarded as a useful NES adaptation.
