How it plays

How does Pokémon Gold Version play?

The player views the world from a top-down perspective, traveling through towns, routes, caves, and buildings. Pokémon are caught with Poké Balls, trained through battles, and used in turn-based fights against wild Pokémon and other Trainers.

The main progression involves earning eight Johto Gym Badges, defeating the Elite Four and Champion, and completing parts of the Pokédex. Time of day affects encounters and events. Trading and battling with compatible Pokémon games are supported through the Game Link Cable.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Pokémon Gold Version?

Build a balanced team with different types and keep several Pokémon near the same level. Visit Pokémon Centers often, carry status-healing items, and use type advantages rather than relying on one strong attacker.

Talk to residents and revisit earlier areas after gaining new abilities or items. Save before important battles and unique encounters, since some Pokémon can flee or be missed.
