How it plays
The game uses a top-down overworld perspective. The player visits card clubs, laboratories, shops, and other locations, speaking with characters and challenging duelists to obtain booster packs, cards, and progress toward the League.
Battles are turn-based Pokémon TCG matches. Players attach Energy, play Trainer cards, evolve Pokémon, and attack until all opposing Pokémon are defeated or the opponent has no cards left for the required prizes. New cards and victories allow stronger decks and access to additional clubs.
Plan your run
Build a focused deck around one or two compatible Energy types rather than trying to use every Pokémon you own. Keep enough Basic Pokémon in the deck to establish a starting board, and include Trainer cards that improve consistency or recover important cards.
Track Energy requirements and retreat costs before attacking. Save strong Trainer cards for decisive turns, evolve Pokémon when it improves survivability or damage, and adjust the deck after each club challenge to answer the local leaders' strategies.

Pokémon Trading Card Game is a digital collectible card game and light role-playing adventure developed by Creatures, Inc. for Game Boy. The player travels through a Pokémon-themed world, builds decks from virtual cards, and challenges club leaders to earn Master Medals and qualify for the Pokémon Card League. Its turn-based battles closely follow the rules of the physical card game while simplifying card management for a handheld audience. The game was well received for making Pokémon TCG play accessible without requiring physical cards, and it became a notable early example of a licensed card game translated into a complete console adventure.
