How it plays
Explore the Kanto region from a top-down view, talk to characters, collect items, solve simple environmental obstacles, and travel between towns and routes. Wild Pokémon appear in designated areas, while some battles against Trainers are mandatory.
Capture Pokémon with Poké Balls, form a party of up to six, and use turn-based moves in battle. Pokémon gain experience, level up, learn moves, evolve, and can be exchanged with other Game Boy Pokémon games. Progress is mainly measured by defeating eight Gym Leaders, obtaining their Badges, and overcoming the Elite Four and Champion.
Plan your run
Build a balanced party with different types and reliable status or support moves. Keep several Pokémon trained near the same level so important battles do not depend on one attacker.
Carry healing items, antidotes, and Poké Balls before entering caves or challenging a Gym. Pay attention to type matchups, but also account for move power, accuracy, and the opponent’s level. Save before major battles and before attempting difficult captures.

Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition is a role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo. It follows a young Trainer who sets out from Pallet Town with Pikachu, captures Pokémon, defeats Gym Leaders, and challenges the Elite Four. Battles are turn-based, while exploration takes place from a top-down perspective across towns, routes, caves, and other areas. Yellow adapts parts of the television series, including Pikachu’s unwillingness to remain in its Poké Ball and the appearances of Jessie and James. It also revises the starter choice and several encounters from Pokémon Red and Blue. The game was well received for its approachable structure, Pikachu-focused presentation, and close connection to the popular anime.
