How it plays
Nova travels through six main areas, each built from side-scrolling rooms and hazards that lead toward a stage boss. The objective is to explore the area, locate the route forward, defeat enemies, and reach the boss before continuing to the next location.
The A button makes Nova jump, while B throws his boomerang. The boomerang can be upgraded, allowing stronger attacks and improved control over returning projectiles. Nova can also collect health and weapon-related power-ups, making careful exploration important instead of simply rushing to the exit.
The game is a single-player NES adventure with no selectable multiplayer mode. Progress depends on clearing areas and managing limited health during platforming sections and boss encounters.
Plan your run
Search each area instead of taking the first visible path. Hidden rooms and side passages can contain boomerang upgrades or health, and stronger boomerang power makes later enemy groups safer to approach.
Use the boomerang from a distance, then watch its return path before jumping into an enemy. During boss fights, learn the boss's movement cycle and keep Nova positioned so the returning weapon can strike without forcing a dangerous close approach.
Meet the cast
The protagonist, a futuristic agent who uses an energy boomerang to fight through the city and stop the central threat.
Before you begin
Look for concealed entrances and side passages; exploration is often rewarded with weapon or health upgrades.
Do not throw the boomerang immediately before a jump unless its return path is safe.
Use platforms to control enemy spacing rather than exchanging contact damage.
Power Blade is a 1991 NES action-platform game developed by Natsume and published in North America by Taito. It stars Nova, an agent armed with a large energy boomerang, as he investigates a crisis affecting a futuristic city. The game combines side-scrolling platforming with exploration, enemy combat, and boss battles rather than following a purely linear run-and-gun structure. Nova searches each area for access to its boss while finding upgrades that improve the boomerang. Its open-feeling stages, responsive movement, and demanding enemy patterns earned it a positive reputation among NES action games. Power Blade is also notable for being a substantial redesign of the Japanese Power Blazer, with a different hero, presentation, and level design.
