R-9 series ships
The player-controlled combat craft family, with different models offering different weapons and Force traits.
How it plays
R-Type Delta is viewed from the side. The objective is to survive a sequence of scrolling stages, destroy enemies and installations, collect power-ups, and defeat large end-of-stage bosses. Players control speed, positioning, the main weapon, and the detachable Force pod while avoiding terrain and projectiles.
The Force can be fired forward or backward and detached to block attacks or strike enemies. The main fighter can charge a stronger shot, and different weapon pickups alter the Force's attack pattern. Several ships are available, and the game uses branching routes and performance-based progression to provide different stage paths.
Plan your run
Learn each stage's enemy entrances, terrain hazards, and boss patterns rather than relying on continuous firing alone. Keep the Force positioned where it can absorb bullets or cover the direction of the next attack, and charge the Wave-Cannon during safe openings.
Preserve lives for unfamiliar bosses, use speed changes sparingly, and choose a ship whose weapon suits the route. Replaying completed stages is useful for learning scoring opportunities and the conditions that lead to alternate paths.

Before you begin
Use the Force defensively as well as offensively; its placement is often more important than raw firepower.
Memorize boss warning patterns and keep a retreat lane open before charging a shot.
R-Type Delta is a horizontal science-fiction shoot 'em up developed and published by Irem for the original PlayStation. It places the player in advanced R-Type fighters sent against the Bydo threat across heavily defended planets, machines, and other hostile environments. The game combines precise side-scrolling movement with the series' distinctive Force pod, which can be attached to the front or rear of the craft and used for offense or defense. Unlike earlier entries, Delta offers several playable ships with different weapons and a route structure that can change according to performance. Its polygonal presentation, aggressive enemy designs, and demanding difficulty made it a notable late-1990s console shooter. It was generally well received for modernizing the series without abandoning its tactical shooting fundamentals.
