How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective across connected city areas. Alex and Ryan move through streets, alleys, shops, and gang territories while defeating groups of enemies and locating bosses.
Players can punch, kick, jump, grab opponents, throw objects, and use weapons found in the environment. Money dropped by enemies can be spent in shops on food, manuals, and other items. Food restores health or raises statistics, while manuals unlock special moves. Progress is saved through passwords rather than battery-backed saving, and two-player cooperative play is available.

Before you begin
Explore shops instead of rushing directly toward the next gang area; several useful upgrades are purchased rather than found.
Enemy weapons can be more effective than unarmed attacks, but dropped objects disappear after use.
Passwords preserve progress, so record them carefully when continuing later.
River City Ransom is a side-scrolling beat 'em up with light action-RPG mechanics, developed by Technos Japan for the Nintendo Entertainment System. Players control Alex and Ryan as they fight through River City to rescue Cyndi from the Slick gang. Alongside punches, kicks, and throws, the game lets players buy food, books, and equipment that improve statistics or teach new techniques. Its nonlinear streets, humorous dialogue, and persistent character growth distinguish it from a straightforward arcade brawler. The game became especially well regarded for combining cooperative fighting with exploration and customization, and it remains one of the NES's most distinctive beat 'em ups.
