Liu Bei
The central lord and campaign leader. Many scenarios are lost if his unit is defeated.
How it plays
Battles use a top-down, grid-based map. The player deploys Liu Bei's allied officers, moves units by turn, attacks enemies, uses special abilities, and captures or protects objectives. Terrain, unit type, morale, and position affect the outcome.
Scenarios follow a largely linear historical campaign. Victories grant experience and may lead to equipment, recruitment, or new events, while defeated officers can affect later battles. Story scenes connect the individual engagements.
Plan your run
Protect Liu Bei and avoid exposing him to concentrated attacks. Use terrain and chokepoints to limit enemy movement, and focus attacks to eliminate one unit at a time rather than spreading damage.
Train weaker officers when the scenario allows it, but do not sacrifice key commanders for experience. Check objectives carefully: some battles reward survival, escape, or reaching a location rather than defeating every enemy.

Before you begin

Romance of the Three Kingdoms: Eiketsuden is a turn-based tactical role-playing game developed and published by Koei. It retells major episodes from the late Han dynasty through the campaign of Liu Bei, combining historical battles with a character-driven presentation. Players move selected officers across grid-based battlefields, complete scenario objectives, and develop a small force through successive chapters. Between battles, the game advances its narrative through conversations and event scenes. It is more focused than Koei's mainline grand-strategy games, replacing extensive domestic management with campaign progression and tactical decisions. The game is generally noted for making the Three Kingdoms story approachable while retaining demanding battles and a substantial historical cast.
