How it plays
Rygar is viewed primarily from a side-scrolling perspective, with overhead sections used to travel across Argool. The objective is to visit key areas, defeat guardians, gather information and power-ups, and ultimately confront Emperor Ligar.
Rygar attacks with the extendable Diskarmor, jumps across platforms, and uses magical abilities after obtaining them. Experience raises his attack and defense, while new powers open routes and improve survival. The game includes exploration areas, combat stages, towns, caves, and boss encounters rather than a simple linear stage sequence.
Plan your run
Explore methodically and talk to inhabitants before committing to difficult areas; their information helps identify destinations and objectives.
Build experience in safer areas, collect power-ups, and use the Diskarmor's reach to attack enemies from outside their contact range. Save magic for situations where it provides a clear advantage, and learn enemy patterns before entering boss encounters.

Rygar is a side-scrolling action-adventure game developed and published by Tecmo for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The player controls Rygar, a revived warrior defending the land of Argool from the invading forces of the evil Emperor Ligar. Its core play combines platforming, melee combat with the Diskarmor, exploration, and character progression through acquired abilities. The NES version expands substantially on the earlier arcade game with a connected overworld, towns, interior areas, and a more exploratory structure. It was noted for its large world and unusual blend of arcade action and adventure mechanics, although its difficulty and occasionally confusing navigation received mixed reactions.
