How it plays
Players choose one of seven protagonists, then explore towns, dungeons, ruins, and other Regions while pursuing that character's scenario. The perspective is a third-person overhead view, with selectable party members and turn-based battles triggered by visible or hidden enemies.
Combat allows commands for weapons, martial arts, magic, items, defense, and retreats. Characters learn abilities during battle, monsters absorb powers and transform, and humans can combine compatible attacks into stronger team techniques. Equipment, party formation, LP, and scenario-specific objectives shape progression. New Game Plus-style replay is not part of the original PlayStation release, so completing other protagonists' stories is the main way to experience the game's broader content.
Plan your run
Save in multiple files before entering major dungeons or beginning important scenario events. The game often allows exploration, but some story transitions can close off optional content or make an area more dangerous.
Build parties around complementary weapon types and magic schools rather than giving every character the same role. Learn new skills through repeated use in battle, upgrade armor as well as weapons, and keep restorative items available. Recruit broadly, experiment with formations, and retreat when LP loss or enemy difficulty begins to overwhelm the party.

SaGa Frontier is a science-fantasy role-playing game developed and published by Square for the original PlayStation. It presents seven separate protagonist scenarios set across a connected collection of worlds called the Regions. Each story has its own tone, objectives, and party possibilities, while recurring systems let characters grow through exploration and combat rather than through a strictly fixed adventure path. The game uses turn-based battles with weapon skills, martial arts, magic, monsters, and a distinctive combination system. Its open structure gives players considerable freedom, although some scenarios are more guided than others. Reception was mixed to positive: critics praised its ambition, combat depth, music, and replay value, while noting uneven storytelling, abrupt difficulty, and technical limitations. It has since become a notable and influential PlayStation-era SaGa title.
