Fun School 2: For the Under-6s
DOSEducational
How it plays
The player oversees a petroleum refinery from a management interface presenting plant sections, resources, tanks, finances, and operating information. The objective is to keep the refinery functioning while producing sellable petroleum products and maintaining acceptable economic performance.
Gameplay involves adjusting process settings, directing material through refining stages, managing inventories and staffing, and dealing with maintenance or operational problems. Progress is based on sustained plant performance rather than discrete action stages. The simulation is primarily single-player and does not use a conventional character or level-based adventure structure.
Plan your run
Begin by observing the refinery's current flows, storage levels, and financial state before changing several controls at once.
SimRefinery is a business and industrial simulation developed by Maxis for DOS. Commissioned as an educational model of petroleum refining, it places the player in charge of a refinery rather than a city, household, or amusement park. The core premise is to balance production, storage, staffing, maintenance, safety, and finances while responding to changing operating conditions. The game uses a systems-focused management style built around charts, plant controls, and interconnected processing stages. It is less approachable than Maxis's consumer-oriented simulations and was never a major commercial release, but it is historically notable for showing how the Sim framework could model a real industrial process. Its specialized subject matter and limited distribution have made it a distinctive curiosity among DOS simulation games.
