How it plays

How does Space Harrier play?

The camera follows Space Harrier from behind as the character advances automatically through a sequence of stages. The player moves in eight directions, aims the on-screen character, fires the laser, and avoids enemies, projectiles, trees, pillars, and other obstacles.

Stages contain enemy formations and large encounters, with a boss or set-piece challenge appearing at the end of many sections. Progress depends on surviving each stage and defeating threats quickly; collisions and hostile shots reduce the player's limited lives. The game is primarily a single-player arcade challenge with no character-building system or branching campaign.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Space Harrier?

Keep moving rather than remaining in the center of the screen. Horizontal movement is especially important against incoming projectiles and objects that approach from the horizon.

Fire continuously when enemies appear, but watch the scenery as carefully as the targets. Learn the timing of recurring formations and approach large enemies while leaving room to dodge their attacks.
