How it plays
Players view each course from a side-scrolling perspective and must reach its goal while avoiding enemies, hazards, and pits. Mario or Luigi can run, jump, stomp enemies, collect coins, and use power-ups such as the Super Leaf, Tanooki Suit, and Frog Suit.
The Mushroom World is divided into themed areas connected by a map containing standard stages, fortresses, bonus games, and airships. Completing stages opens routes toward each area’s castle, where a Koopalings battle must be won. Inventory items and map events provide alternate ways to approach progression.
Plan your run
Learn each stage’s enemy patterns before committing to long jumps, and keep a reserve power-up in the item inventory for difficult sections.
Explore suspicious walls, pipes, and open spaces. Coins, hidden blocks, warp whistles, and map items can reveal shortcuts or improve your chances against fortresses and airships.

The game combines traditional obstacle-course platforming with a world map, power-ups, hidden routes, and varied stage themes. It was generally well received for preserving the original game while adding portable enhancements and optional content.
