How it plays
The game uses a third-person perspective. Players guide Gabe through linear missions with optional exploration, completing objectives such as eliminating targets, rescuing civilians, securing evidence, and reaching extraction points.
Gabe can run, crouch, climb, use weapons, interact with objects, and employ equipment such as night vision and thermal vision. Missions gradually introduce new weapons, enemy types, environments, and multi-stage objectives. Health is limited, so positioning, stealth, and conserving ammunition are important.
Plan your run
Use cover and corners to reduce exposure, especially when facing heavily armed soldiers. Crouching can improve stability and makes it easier to approach some enemies without immediately attracting attention.
Conserve specialized ammunition and use the weapon best suited to each situation. Check rooms carefully for objectives, equipment, and evidence before moving on, because many missions require more than simply defeating every enemy.
Save thermal and night vision for areas where they are genuinely useful. When a mission gives a nonlethal objective or requires protecting a target, avoid indiscriminate explosives and confirm the objective before firing.

Editorial context
A strong PlayStation third-person shooter with varied objectives, memorable set pieces, and a serious espionage atmosphere.
Its aiming and camera can take practice, but the mixture of stealth, shooting, and gadget use remains distinctive.
Syphon Filter is a third-person action and stealth game developed by Eidetic and published by 989 Studios for the original PlayStation. It follows covert operative Gabe Logan as he investigates a deadly bioterrorist conspiracy spanning several international locations. Missions combine shooting, infiltration, surveillance, hostage situations, and objective-based exploration. Its arsenal includes conventional firearms, explosives, and specialized equipment, while many encounters reward careful positioning rather than constant gunfire. The game was well received for its cinematic presentation, varied missions, and responsive controls, although its difficulty and occasional camera or targeting limitations were frequently noted. It became the starting point of a successful PlayStation series.
