Games are viewed from a side-on, scrolling field perspective. The objective is to outscore the opposing team through running plays, passes, field goals, and defensive stops.

Before each play, the offense and defense choose from a small set of formations or plays. On offense, the player controls the quarterback, selects a receiver for a pass, or runs with the ball carrier. On defense, the player switches among defenders and attempts tackles, interceptions, or sacks. A game is divided into timed quarters, and possession, downs, field position, and scoring determine progression within each match.

Choose plays that match the opponent's defensive alignment, and avoid repeating the same option often enough to become predictable. Running plays are useful for controlling the clock and gaining steady yardage, while passes can exploit open receivers when the defense commits to stopping the run.

On defense, switch to the defender nearest the ball and approach from an angle rather than chasing directly behind the runner. Save speed bursts for open-field pursuit, and watch for likely passing routes before committing to a tackle.
