Rikimaru
A disciplined senior ninja serving Lord Gohda. He favors a direct, composed approach and uses the ninjato.
How it plays
The game uses a third-person perspective across individual missions set in castles, villages, forests, and other feudal locations. Each stage assigns objectives such as eliminating a target, rescuing a captive, retrieving an item, or reaching an extraction point.
Players can move quietly, hide in darkness, climb or jump across portions of the environment, observe patrols, use grappling equipment, and attack with weapons or ninja tools. Completing missions improves the ninja’s standing through a performance ranking, while discovered or noisy approaches make encounters substantially more dangerous.
Plan your run
Study patrol routes before moving, and avoid rushing across open ground. Darkness, rooftops, and corners are safer than prolonged fights.
Use a distraction or a thrown tool to separate guards, then approach from behind. Save healing items for unavoidable battles and aim for clean, quiet kills to preserve a strong mission rank.

Tenchu: Stealth Assassins is a third-person stealth-action game developed by Acquire for the original PlayStation. Players serve Lord Gohda as one of two ninja, Rikimaru or Ayame, undertaking missions involving assassination, rescue, espionage, and infiltration. Rather than relying on constant combat, the game emphasizes shadows, rooftop movement, guards’ patrol patterns, and discreet executions. Its mission-based structure, atmospheric environments, and emphasis on patience helped establish Tenchu as an influential console stealth series. The game was well received for making stealth the central challenge of a ninja action game, although its camera, controls, and uneven enemy behavior were frequent criticisms. A mission editor and multiple playable characters add replay value beyond the main campaign.
