How it plays
Mikey travels through horizontally scrolling areas and interconnected first-person rooms. The objective is to locate prisoners and key items, open blocked routes, and eventually complete the rescue. Doors lead to rooms containing enemies, treasure, tools, and occasional clues.
The player jumps over hazards, attacks with a selected weapon, and changes equipment as new tools are found. Progress depends on exploring both sides of the map, revisiting earlier rooms, and using items such as keys, bombs, and special weapons at the appropriate locations. There is one main adventure rather than separate selectable modes.
Plan your run
Map the connected rooms and note doors that cannot yet be opened. The game expects frequent backtracking, so remember the location of locked doors, blocked passages, and useful items.
Choose weapons according to the situation rather than spending ammunition freely. Search rooms thoroughly, collect keys and equipment early, and return to previously visited areas when a new item suggests a possible route.

The Goonies II is a Nintendo Entertainment System action-adventure game developed and published by Konami in 1987. It is based on the 1985 film The Goonies, but presents an original rescue scenario rather than directly retelling the movie. Players control Mikey as he explores a sprawling hideout, defeats enemies, gathers equipment, and searches for Annie and two baby octopuses. The game combines side-scrolling platform action with first-person rooms connected by doors. Its mixture of exploration, item use, and puzzle solving gives it a distinctive structure for an NES title. Contemporary and later reception has generally recognized its unusual design and atmosphere, while also noting its confusing layout and demanding backtracking.
