How it plays
Link explores Koholint from an overhead perspective, traveling between villages, forests, beaches, caves, and dungeon entrances. He attacks with a sword, blocks with a shield, collects equipment, solves environmental puzzles, and defeats bosses to obtain the Instruments of the Sirens.
Each dungeon provides a distinct item that expands Link's abilities and opens previously inaccessible routes. The game also includes trading quests, heart pieces, optional shells, a fishing game, and a photo feature in some versions. Progress is largely nonlinear between major objectives, but dungeon order and item acquisition establish the main progression.
Plan your run
Explore thoroughly after receiving each dungeon item; new equipment often reveals shortcuts, heart pieces, and shells in earlier areas.

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is an action-adventure game developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy. After a storm wrecks Link's ship, he awakens on the mysterious island of Koholint, where he must explore dungeons and recover eight Instruments of the Sirens. The game combines overhead exploration, puzzle-solving, combat, and occasional side-scrolling areas. Although it was a portable entry built from the foundations of A Link to the Past, it introduced an original setting and a more whimsical, dreamlike story. Critics and players widely praised its ambitious scale, memorable characters, inventive dungeons, and unusually strong presentation for Game Boy hardware.
