How it plays

How does The Legend of Zelda play?

Players view Hyrule from above and guide Link through forests, lakes, caves, graveyards, and other areas. The main objectives are to find eight dungeons, defeat their guardians, collect the Triforce fragments, and reach the final battle with Ganon.

Link attacks with his sword, uses a selected secondary item, gathers rupees and containers, and gains access to new areas through dungeon items. Each dungeon contains rooms, keys, maps, compasses, a major item, and a boss. A completed first quest unlocks a rearranged second quest.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play The Legend of Zelda?

Explore widely before committing to a dungeon. Bomb suspicious walls, burn isolated trees, and revisit cleared areas after obtaining new equipment; many upgrades and heart containers are hidden outside the main path.

Keep a reliable supply of bombs and arrows, use the shield against suitable projectiles, and learn enemy movement rather than attacking continuously. Save stronger consumables for difficult rooms, and use the dungeon map and compass to avoid overlooking stairways or item rooms.

Editorial context

What do players highlight?

A foundational NES action-adventure whose open exploration, secrets, and dungeon design remain highly influential.

Its lack of explicit direction can be demanding, but that uncertainty is central to the discovery-driven experience.
