How it plays
The hospital is viewed from an overhead perspective. The player buys land, lays out corridors, builds treatment and support rooms, hires staff, and places equipment. Patients arrive with symptoms, move through diagnosis, and are sent to the appropriate treatment room.
Scenarios are completed by meeting objectives such as achieving a financial target, curing enough patients, or maintaining hospital reputation. Research unlocks improved rooms and cures, while staff fatigue, epidemics, equipment breakdowns, and queues create continuing management problems.
Plan your run
Plan corridors before placing rooms, and keep diagnosis facilities close to reception so patients do not spend too long walking. Leave space for expanding busy treatment areas and place benches and radiators where queues form.
Train and monitor staff, especially doctors and nurses assigned to high-pressure rooms. Keep a cash reserve for emergencies, research profitable cures, and avoid building expensive facilities before patient demand justifies them.
Meet the cast
The game focuses on hospital management rather than fixed story characters.
Before you begin
Build diagnosis rooms early and watch queue lengths rather than relying only on the hospital balance.
Use staff rooms and benches to reduce fatigue and patient frustration.
Pause or slow the game when redesigning rooms or responding to an epidemic.
Theme Hospital is a comedic business-management simulation developed by Bullfrog Productions and published by Electronic Arts. The player designs and operates a hospital, balancing construction, staffing, finances, research, and patient care while treating exaggerated fictional illnesses. Its play style combines an overhead building editor with real-time management: rooms must be placed efficiently, staff must be assigned sensibly, and emergencies can disrupt carefully planned operations. The game is known for its irreverent humor, distinctive announcer, and memorable illnesses such as Bloaty Head and King Complex. It received generally favorable reviews for making a complex simulation approachable and entertaining, although some critics found the later scenarios demanding. The PlayStation version brought the same management-focused experience to a console audience.
