How it plays
The game uses a third-person perspective behind the vehicle. In the main tournament, the player selects a driver, defeats opponents in successive arenas, and advances through a character-specific story. Arenas contain health, ammunition, and special-weapon pickups, while environmental hazards can damage or trap vehicles.
Players accelerate, steer, reverse, fire mounted weapons, and activate a vehicle-specific special attack. Weapon pickups support different combat approaches, and successful battles generally lead to later arenas and story scenes. Single-player quick matches and multiplayer battles provide shorter sessions outside the tournament.
Plan your run
Collect weapons before engaging whenever possible, and keep a reliable supply of ammunition for the arena’s strongest opponents. Use the environment for cover, but avoid getting trapped against walls or hazards.
Learn each vehicle’s special attack and match it to the arena. Fast vehicles should make repeated passes, while heavier vehicles can pressure opponents at close range. Monitor health pickups and use radar awareness to avoid being attacked from behind.

Twisted Metal 3 is a vehicular-combat action game developed by 989 Studios and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the original PlayStation. Players choose an armed vehicle and fight through large arenas filled with hazards, pickups, rival drivers, and destructible scenery. Its core play style combines driving, weapon management, evasive movement, and aggressive arena combat rather than conventional racing. The game includes a character-focused single-player tournament, quick battles, and multiplayer modes. It was historically notable for expanding the scale of the series on PlayStation, although its handling and physics received more mixed reactions than those of the earlier entries. The tournament’s dark comic-book presentation and distinctive drivers remain central to its identity.
