The Avatar
The player-created leader of a party of four adventurers.
How it plays
The world is viewed from above. The party travels across the overworld, enters towns and castles, explores dungeons, searches specific locations, and speaks with non-player characters for information and services.
Combat takes place on a separate tactical map and proceeds in turns. Each party member can move, attack, cast spells, use equipment, or perform another available command. Progress depends on earning gold and experience, improving equipment, finding useful items, and assembling the means to reach and defeat Exodus.
Plan your run
Build a balanced party with dependable front-line fighters, at least one strong spellcaster, and characters able to use useful weapons and armor.
Explore towns and dungeons methodically. Buy better equipment, keep healing and utility spells available, and avoid difficult areas until the party has gained levels and improved its gear.
Turn-based combat rewards positioning. Protect weaker characters, focus attacks on dangerous enemies, and use terrain and ranged attacks when possible.

Ultima III: Exodus is a fantasy role-playing game developed and published by Origin Systems. It is the third main Ultima and follows the Avatar's return to Sosaria to confront Exodus, a powerful enemy threatening the world. The game combines top-down exploration, town and dungeon visits, party management, and turn-based combat. Players create a party of four characters, choose classes, acquire equipment, and develop abilities through exploration and battle. Its party-based design and tactical combat represented a substantial advance over the earlier games in the series. Ultima III was widely regarded as an important early computer RPG and helped establish conventions later used by many role-playing games.
