Combat attacks are assigned to the four PlayStation face buttons according to party position.
Some commands vary by screen and character equipment.
How it plays
Players guide Lenneth across an overworld map and enter towns, forests, ruins, towers, and other side-scrolling locations. Exploration involves jumping, freezing objects with crystals, finding hidden paths, solving environmental puzzles, and fighting or avoiding enemies.
Combat is turn-based, but each party member is assigned to a PlayStation face button. Pressing buttons in combination creates coordinated attacks and can launch enemies into the air for extended combos. Between chapters, players recruit einherjar, improve equipment and skills, and send selected warriors to Valhalla to meet Freya’s requirements. The game has multiple endings determined by exploration, story choices, and hidden conditions.
Plan your run
Explore each location thoroughly before leaving. Crystal platforms and frozen enemies often reveal treasure or alternate routes, while the chapter time limit makes planning important.
Develop a balanced party with different attack types, keep weapons and armor updated, and practice coordinated attacks to create combos and Finishing Strikes. Pay attention to Freya’s evaluation requirements, and preserve a guide or written record of events if pursuing the best ending, since several conditions are easy to miss.

Editorial context
A distinctive PlayStation RPG praised for its combat depth, tragic character stories, and ambitious structure.
Its time management and missable story conditions can feel difficult without careful planning.
Valkyrie Profile is a story-driven role-playing game developed by tri-Ace and published by Enix for the original PlayStation. It follows Lenneth Valkyrie, who gathers the souls of worthy human warriors before Ragnarök and prepares them for service in Asgard. The game combines side-scrolling platform exploration, tactical turn-based combat, character development, and extensive narrative scenes based on each recruit’s death. Its branching structure, unusual battle system, and Norse-inspired setting distinguished it from conventional console RPGs. The game received strong critical praise for its ambitious storytelling, atmospheric presentation, and depth, although its complexity and time-sensitive progression could be demanding for new players.
