How it plays
The game uses an isometric tactical perspective. Players move a party of heroes across grid-based battlefields, defeat enemy units, complete scenario objectives, and protect important characters or locations when required.
Each unit takes actions during its side's turn. Characters can move, attack, cast magic, use items, change equipment, and sometimes promote into stronger classes. Experience, weapons, armor, spells, and class changes provide the main progression between missions.
Plan your run
Use terrain, elevation, and chokepoints to limit enemy attacks, and avoid leaving fragile healers or spellcasters exposed. Focus attacks to remove one enemy at a time rather than spreading damage across the battlefield.
Plan class promotions around the party's needs, keep several weapon types available, and save healing items for missions that restrict access to shops. Check equipment and spell charges before every scenario.

Vandal Hearts is a tactical role-playing game developed by Konami Computer Entertainment Tokyo and published by Konami for the original PlayStation. It follows Ash Lambert, a former soldier who returns to the kingdom of Ishtaria and becomes entangled in a political conspiracy, civil unrest, and an ancient supernatural threat. Battles take place on compact three-dimensional maps divided into movement spaces, combining character positioning with class-based abilities and equipment management. The adventure mixes story scenes, town exploration, shops, and turn-based combat. Its fast battles and accessible systems made it a notable alternative to slower strategy RPGs of the era. Critics generally praised its dramatic presentation and approachable mechanics, while some found its plot and difficulty uneven.
