How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective. Wario explores a world map containing four main regions, each with multiple stages, while searching for treasure chests and musical coins.
Stages are revisited after new abilities or keys are found. Wario can jump, ram enemies, grab objects, swim, climb, fly, and use transformations to reach previously inaccessible locations. Four colored keys open matching chests, and collected treasures unlock further routes and abilities.
Plan your run
Explore each stage thoroughly instead of rushing to the exit. Mark blocked passages, suspicious walls, and unopened chests so you can return after gaining a new ability.
Use transformations deliberately: some are temporary movement tools, while others activate switches or reveal routes. Collect musical coins and keys whenever possible, because they open progression paths and help complete the world.

Enemy transformations can be useful puzzle tools, not merely hazards.
Check alternate exits and upper or lower routes before leaving a stage.
Editorial context
A large, clever adventure that makes excellent use of the Game Boy’s limited hardware.
Its exploration-heavy structure gives it more depth than a straightforward platformer.
Wario Land 3 is a platform-adventure game developed by Nintendo R&D1 and published by Nintendo for the Game Boy. Wario is trapped inside a mysterious music box and must recover four magical treasures to escape. Unlike a conventional platformer, the game emphasizes exploration, interconnected stages, secret routes, and abilities that change how earlier areas can be traversed. Wario cannot die from ordinary enemy contact, but he can be transformed or knocked into hazards. The game was widely praised for its substantial world, inventive power-ups, and ambitious design on the Game Boy, and is often regarded as one of the system’s strongest adventure-platformers.
