How it plays

How does Ys: The Vanished Omens play?

The game uses an overhead perspective. Adol explores towns, fields, caves, and towers, speaks with residents, gathers equipment, and searches for the Books of Ys. Enemies are defeated by moving into them at an angle rather than selecting a separate attack command.

Progression comes from experience levels, weapons, armor, shields, rings, and key items. The story advances through exploration and conversations, while several bosses test equipment, movement, and timing. The adventure is primarily a single-player campaign with interconnected areas and dungeon sections.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Ys: The Vanished Omens?

Upgrade equipment whenever a new town or dungeon makes better gear available. Search every room and speak with residents repeatedly; important clues and quest items are often obtained through conversation.

During combat, approach enemies from the side or at an angle and keep moving. Save before major dungeons and bosses, carry healing items when available, and use the wing item to return to town when the game permits it.
