How it plays

How does Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters play?

Dueling uses a top-down field presentation with menu-based commands. The objective is to reduce the opponent's Life Points to zero by summoning monsters, setting cards, and using attack and effect decisions within the game's rule set.

Players progress through opponents, improve their available card pool, and assemble decks for later matches. The Game Boy version also supports card passwords, allowing documented cards to be entered outside normal progression.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters?

Build a balanced deck instead of filling it with only high-level monsters. Include enough low-level monsters to establish a field early, then preserve stronger cards for decisive attacks.

Track card effects and summoning requirements carefully. Passwords can expand the collection, but a larger card pool does not replace a consistent deck with a reliable mix of monsters, support cards, and defensive options.
