How it plays

How does Zelda II: The Adventure of Link play?

Link travels across an overhead map, entering towns, palaces, caves, and combat encounters. Random enemies on the map trigger side-scrolling battles, while towns provide clues, magic spells, healing, and key story information.

The objective is to recover six crystals from palaces, defeat their guardians, and place the crystals in their statues. Experience earned from enemies raises Link’s Attack, Magic, and Life levels. New spells, sword techniques, and items open routes and make later areas accessible.

Plan your run

What is the best way to play Zelda II: The Adventure of Link?

Use shield timing and crouching attacks carefully; many enemies are safest to defeat by striking while blocking. Learn the downward thrust and upward thrust as soon as possible, since they are essential against armored enemies and difficult bosses.

Spend experience thoughtfully, and avoid entering a palace with low Life or Magic. Towns often hide important spells behind specific residents, while the Hammer, Boots, Flute, and Cross are required for reliable progress through the overworld and palaces.
