How it plays
JJ explores a large enemy complex through connected rooms viewed from a side-scrolling perspective. The main objectives are to locate cards, activate terminals, open doors, rescue imprisoned allies, and reach the final confrontation.
Players move, jump, fire the gun, avoid hazards, and search suspicious-looking areas. Passwords preserve progress between sessions, while ammunition and health management make careful exploration important. The game is primarily a single-player adventure with no selectable multiplayer mode.
Plan your run
Search every accessible room before pushing deeper into the base. Cards and terminals often determine which routes can be opened, so revisit earlier areas after obtaining new access.
Conserve ammunition and health when possible, learn enemy patterns, and use passwords to record progress. Avoid rushing jumps near hazards; controlled movement is safer than continuous firing and charging forward.

Zillion is a science-fiction action-adventure game developed by Compile and published by Sega for the Sega Master System. The player controls JJ, a soldier investigating a hostile base and rescuing members of the White Knights. Exploration combines side-scrolling platform action with room-by-room searching, shooting, jumping, and code-based progression. The game is structured around finding access cards, opening locked areas, and learning passwords rather than simply defeating every enemy. Its difficult navigation and limited resources were demanding by contemporary standards, but the game was well regarded for bringing a more exploratory adventure format to the Master System and for its connection to Sega's Zillion anime and toy branding.
