P-38 Lightning
The player's fighter plane, deployed across the Pacific war zone for continuous air combat missions.
How it plays
The player views the battlefield from above and pilots a fighter through vertically scrolling stages. The objective is to destroy enemy formations, avoid projectiles, defeat large bosses, and reach the end of each mission.
Power-ups change the aircraft's weapons or improve its capabilities. Progression is stage-based, with naval and military targets acting as major encounters. The game is designed for repeated attempts, requiring memorization of enemy patterns and disciplined positioning.
Plan your run
Stay near the center of the screen when possible so incoming attacks can be approached from either side. Prioritize threats that fire directly at the aircraft rather than harmless scenery targets.
Use weapon power-ups deliberately, preserve special attacks for dense formations or bosses, and learn the timing of each stage through repeated runs. Avoid chasing every item if doing so moves the aircraft into a dangerous position.
Meet the cast
The player's fighter plane, deployed across the Pacific war zone for continuous air combat missions.
Before you begin
Watch for enemy formations entering from the sides, not only from the top of the screen.
Keep moving in short horizontal adjustments instead of making large uncontrolled sweeps.
Learn boss attack patterns and focus on survival when the screen becomes crowded.
1943 Kai: Midway Kaisen is a vertically scrolling shoot 'em up developed by Capcom for the PC Engine and published in Japan by Naxat Soft. It reworks the arcade game 1943 with a Pacific theater setting, placing the player in a fighter aircraft battling large waves of enemy planes, ships, tanks, and naval bosses. The game emphasizes constant movement, weapon selection, and careful management of the aircraft's energy and special attacks. Its compact PC Engine presentation preserves the fast arcade structure while adapting the game for home play. Reception has generally recognized it as a solid, demanding conversion with familiar 1943 mechanics and platform-specific changes.
