Ickis
A young red monster and the central student of the trio. He uses his extendable head and monster abilities to attack and navigate stages.
How it plays
The game uses a side-view perspective and places the monsters in linear stages filled with platforms, hazards, enemies, and objects to collect. The goal is to reach the end of each assignment while using the trio's abilities to overcome obstacles and frighten opponents.
Players can move, jump, attack, and interact with the environment. Ickis can use his signature head transformation, Oblina relies on her tall, flexible body, and Krumm uses his distinctive eyeballs as part of his attacks. Progression comes from clearing successive assignments and advancing through the Academy's themed locations.
Plan your run
Learn the reach and timing of each monster's attack before rushing through a stage. Explore platforms and side areas for useful collectibles, but avoid unnecessary contact with enemies because the trio's health can disappear quickly.
Use jumps conservatively around hazards and observe enemy movement before attacking. When a route seems blocked, look for a character-specific interaction or a nearby platform rather than repeatedly forcing the same approach.
Meet the cast
A young red monster and the central student of the trio. He uses his extendable head and monster abilities to attack and navigate stages.
A tall, black-and-white monster student who accompanies Ickis and contributes her unusual body shape and attacks.
A green monster who carries his eyeballs in his hands and joins the team in its training assignments.
Before you begin
Search high and low platforms instead of following the most direct route.
Use attacks from a safe distance when an enemy's movement pattern is predictable.
Treat each monster's different body and attack properties as part of the level design.
Aaahh!!! Real Monsters is a side-scrolling action platformer developed by Realtime Associates and published by Viacom New Media for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1995. It adapts Nickelodeon's animated series and follows Ickis, Oblina, and Krumm as they train at the Academy for Literally Anything and Everything. The game mixes platform navigation, enemy encounters, collectible hunting, and character-specific monster abilities. Players move through colorful stages inspired by the show's strange humor and school setting. Reception was mixed: the recognizable characters and presentation appealed to fans, while critics commonly found the controls, collision, and repetitive action less polished than stronger SNES platformers.
