The game uses a side-scrolling perspective across nine main stages, with several alternate routes and endings. Richter attacks with his whip, jumps over hazards, collects hearts, and uses subweapons such as axes, holy water, daggers, and crosses.

Players can rescue Maria during the adventure and then select her from the character menu. Each stage ends with a boss, while branching exits and rescued characters affect the route and conclusion. Richter can perform powerful Item Crashes by spending hearts, and Maria uses a different, more agile combat style.

Learn the attack range and timing of each subweapon before committing hearts. Holy water is effective for controlling grounded enemies, while the axe is useful against targets above Richter.

Explore for alternate exits and rescueable characters instead of rushing to the stage goal. Against bosses, prioritize safe positioning and short attacks; Item Crashes are powerful, but saving hearts can be more valuable than using them immediately.
