How it plays
Stages are viewed from an overhead perspective. Bomberman moves through grid-like rooms, clears destructible blocks with bombs, defeats enemies, and searches for the exit or stage objective.
Bombs explode after a delay in a cross-shaped blast. Power-ups can improve bomb range, increase the number of bombs available, or grant other abilities. Players must use walls and timing carefully because explosions can also destroy Bomberman.
The game supports a single-player campaign and competitive battle play. Progression comes from clearing successive stages and using collected abilities to manage more dangerous layouts.
Plan your run
Place bombs from safe positions and keep an unobstructed escape route before each detonation. Early in a stage, clear blocks gradually rather than trapping yourself in a narrow passage.
Use blast corridors and corners to attack enemies indirectly. Collect power-ups when the route is secure, but do not take unnecessary risks for an item near an active bomb.
Before you begin
Watch the blast path, not only the bomb itself; explosions travel in straight lines until blocked.
Avoid placing a bomb against a wall unless you already know where you will move next.
In multiplayer, use temporary blockades and delayed explosions to control movement.
Bomberman for the PC Engine is a maze-based action game developed and published by Hudson Soft. The player guides Bomberman through enclosed stages, placing timed bombs to destroy soft blocks, defeat enemies, and open routes to the exit. Its play style combines careful positioning, quick movement, and gradual power-up collection rather than direct attacks. The PC Engine version also includes competitive multiplayer support when used with the appropriate multitap and controllers. It was well received for translating Bomberman’s simple rules into tense single-player puzzles and lively party matches, helping establish the series as a strong multiplayer property on home consoles.
